"Fire Extinguisher" analogy

"Fire Extinguisher" analogy

This is quoted to: "John in AR" and is his analogy relating owning/carrying a firearm to a fire extinguisher.

"It's about the best way I've personally found to get my idea across. It's not threatening, and it's easy to keep it from devolving into sounding hostile or antisocial. So many times, a pro-defensive-gun argument gets to an uncomfortable place for newbs, simply because the subject matter includes potential violence on their part. A fire extinguisher can easily demonstrate the principle of 'emergency' items that can be important and irreplaceable, without any undercurrents of hostility. They really have almost nothing but purely positive attributes to them, so it's easy to keep the discussion on a positive note.

I keep it along the lines of:

- I don't want to fight fires, but I think it's a good idea to keep fire extinguishers around.

- I certainly don't hope to have a fire, but I think it's a good idea to keep fire extinguishers around.

- While I have no illusions of being a professional firefighter, I still think it's a good idea to keep fire extinguishers around.

- I know that my fire extinguishers aren't capable of handling "every" emergency, but I still keep them on hand.

- I don't go out and buy so many fire extinguishers that I can't pay my mortgage.

- If I live my entire life without using those fire extinguishers, I'll be completely happy about it."

Thanks, John!
